Different Plugins Volume Unbalanced
Article applies to: Sibelius 7
Description
When using several different plugins, the audio levels aren't balanced well.
Solution
To adjust a plugins master level, open the Sibelius Mixer and select the "VI" button. Scroll down (Sibelius 5 and 6) or to the right (Sibelius 7) until you see green channel strips. These strips control each plugins audio output level; adjust levels here as needed.
If certain instruments are still a bit unbalanced you can use the staff channel strips to adjust those instruments independently.
Multiple Kontakt Plugins Available
Article applies to: Sibelius 7; Kontakt/Kontakt Player 5
Description
The Available Devices list displays what appears to be duplicate Kontakt plugin entries, i.e., "Kontakt 4" is listed three times.
Solution
There are several different Kontakt plugins available, each of which has a different number of default audio outputs. On the hard drive each of these files has a distinct name, such as "8 out", "16 out", but plugin display names are taken from internal parts of the plugin rather than the name of the file itself so these files all appear with the same name in Sibelius.
There is little consequence in choosing one over another based on the number of outputs since Sibelius only supports a single stereo pair output and will sum the plugin outputs if patches are sent to different channels.
It is important, however, if using an autoloading sound set, that the correct plugin is activated. In the "Available Devices" list each of these plugins will have a "Type"; either VST, AU, or Kontakt. For an autoloading sound set to be made available, the Kontakt plugin listed as "Kontakt" type must be activated in the configuration.
No Plugin Volume Output
Article applies to: Sibelius 7
Description
Sibelius's meters and the plugin interface indicate MIDI data is being sent and received but there is no audio output.
Solution
Check first that the correct audio interface or sound card is selected in "Playback Devices > Audio Engine Options" and that, if applicable, an appropriate driver is selected. In particular, on Windows, some plugins may require an ASIO driver.
If your sound set requires sounds be loaded manually, check each plugin instance to be sure that the sounds are assigned to the appropriate channels as defined in the manual sound set.
Finally, check that the plugins output is set to an appropriate level by opening the Sibelius Mixer, selecting the "VI" button and scrolling down (Sibelius 5 and 6) or the right (Sibelius 7) and verifying the green plugin channel strips are set appropriately.
This is especially useful if you are using a playback configuration that came with your sound set package as these will occasionally, for no apparent reason, ignore the plugin(s) output level in the file when selected the first time and set levels that are inaudible.
Plugin Doesn't Appear in Available Devices
Article applies to: Sibelius 7; Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
Description
One or more installed VST plugins is not present in Sibelius's "Available Devices" list.
Solution
Missing VST plugins generally mean that although installed, the files are not present in the folder Sibelius is scanning for plugins. The plugin install location may vary from system to system depending on whether the default location was used or you specified an alternate location while installing the software.
Wherever your plugins have been installed, the default Sibelius VST Plugin folders (where the plugins should be copied) are as follows:
32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Sibelius Software\VSTPlugins\
64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sibelius Software\VSTPlugins\
Sibelius 7 (32-bit)
32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Avid\VSTPlugins\
64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\VSTPlugins\
Sibelius 7 (64-bit)
64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Avid\VSTPlugins\
Plugins Don't Appear Sibelius 7 64-bit
Article applies to: Sibelius 7; Mac OS X 10.6+; Windows Vista, Windows 7 64-bit
Description
Plugins used in previous versions of Sibelius do not appear under Sibelius 7 64-bit despite being installed correctly.
Solution
As a 64-bit application, Sibelius 7 is only able to see 64-bit plugins. Sibelius 5 and 6 used 32-bit plugins natively so these files will not be available under Sibelius 7 64-bit.
Many plugin vendors have 64-bit versions of their plugins available, check for any software updates that might be available and contain a 64-bit plugin option.
Mac users will not need to do anything to differentiate between a 32-bit and 64-bit plugin.
Windows users should check the plugins documentation for the location of a 64-bit plugin (when available) and copy the 64-bit plugin to the Sibelius 7 64-bit VSTPlugins folder at: "C:\Program Files\Avid\VSTPlugins\".
If the plugin has both a 32-bit and 64-bit version available, make sure that only the 64-bit version is in this folder as the presence of both could potentially cause conflicts.
If a 64-bit plugin is not available, Sibelius 7 can be run as a 32-bit application which will be able to see the 32-bit plugins.
On Mac, from the "Applications" folder, select the "Sibelius 7.app" package, press "cmd+i" and in the dialog that comes up select "Open in 32-bit mode". The next time Sibelius 7 starts it will run as a 32-bit application.
On Windows, Sibelius 7 can be run as a 32-bit application by running the program from the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius 7\" location.
Windows users who need to use both 32-bit and 64-bit plugins together can do so with a third-party utility like jBridge.
